When Darol Rodrock began building houses on the side to supplement his high school teacher income so he could better support his growing family, he had no idea how far that decision would take him. Fast-forward 35 years.

Locally owned Rodrock Development now numbers more than 70 Johnson County new-home communities in its extensive portfolio. Today, more than 25,000 people come home to Rodrock Development communities in Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, Overland Park, western Shawnee and Stilwell, Kansas. For Rodrock, his company’s Building Better Communities is a promise. One, it turns out, that is part business, a lot personal.

Rodrock admits that that early childhood experiences bouncing in and out of Kansas orphanages, made him “long for a place to call home, a feeling of belonging, opportunities to connect and become friends with neighbors,” he says.

Those that know him best say that’s why Rodrock Development communities offer so much more than houses. More like small town communities, where neighbors know each other, where the schools are the area’s best, the amenities unmatched in their price range, and families thrive.

“When it’s all said and done, I want to know that I’ve given homeowners the best value for their mortgage dollar at purchase time, and also years or decades later when it’s time to move up or relocate,” says Rodrock.

Tom Langhofer, general manager of Rodrock Development offers advice for navigating a new-home purchase, based on his decades of experience. “In today’s market it can be very tempting to jump on a bank-owned bargain, and overlook a developer’s credentials,” says Langhofer.

“The question is, will the community you’re considering stand the test of time in ten, twenty, thirty years? Rodrock Development communities do. Some of our homeowners bought their first home with us 25 years ago, and are now moving up or downsizing, and choosing a Rodrock Development community again. Two important considerations: Developer fiscal integrity is paramount, for sure, and to our way of thinking, so is the developer’s vision.”

The new Rodrock Development website at offers information on all available communities, brand-new floor plans, proven area builders and more. Professionally marketed by Prudential Kansas City Realty, homebuyers can rely on their full-time, on-site expertise to help ease the new home buying and selling process. Rodrock Development communities offer homes from the low $200,000s to the $500,000s and up.
